Vintage Finds and a Perfect Visit

Hi friends! After many days of traveling, I am back home with some photos to share with you.  On September 15, we loaded up the car and began the long journey to see our son in Virginia.  It was a perfect visit!  The temperatures were unseasonably warm, but we didn't care a bit.  We were just grateful to spend time with our oldest child.  Family...it's what life is all about!

Of course, I had to visit a few of my favorite antique stores while in VA. I love this dining room set.  My son is in the market for a set and I think it would look great in his home!
I always stop at this booth and usually find a piece or two to add to my Fostoria collection.  She also has great Pyrex items.  I have one of the turquoise bowls.  Such a happy color! I just love her vintage inspired booth.
Another few booths.  Isn't the burplap wreath cute? I am not sure why, but I am drawn to conversation chairs.  I can just imagine a hard working housewife taking a break from her daily routine to have a phone chat with her closest friend!

Of course, it wasn't all antique shopping.  We ate at a delightful Italian restaurant Sunday afternoon.  Thought you might like a look at the yummiest part of the restaurant!
There is so much history in Virginia.  In the past six years since our son moved there, we have visited much of the state.  This trip we decided to explore the Northern Neck of Virginia.  We stopped in Reedville and walked the main street known as Millionaire's Row with it's impressive Victorian era mansions. Love this picture!  My son and I had just eaten some delicious crab cakes from a little shop along the Chesapeake Bay.  Wish I had one or two for supper tonight!
On the way back to Mississippi, we stopped and spent a few days in the Smoky Mountains.  This fall display was in one of my favorite places to eat and shop...The Apple Barn! I'll take one of everything, please!
It was a blessing to be able to visit our son and enjoy the incredible beauty of God's world! Other than window shopping, I did bring home several adorable vintage pumpkins and beautiful, large real pumpkins of different varieties.  I can't wait show you what I am doing with the real pumpkins! Fall Gatherings Tiered Tray

I purchased a tiered tray this spring and have yet to use it.  At Home with Jemma is hosting a Tiered Tray Extravaganza party this week and I thought it would be a great time to get out my tray and do something with it! I selected an adorable Fall Gathering sign to top my tiered tray.  I decided to place a simple garland of fall berries on the second tier.
And what do you do when you have ripe bananas and left over pumpkin puree? Well, you make banana pumpkin muffins.  I placed the muffins on the largest tier! I'll share the recipe with you later, but I will tell you that this recipe has flax seed hidden within the other ingredients.  I love to hide flax seed in food! I poured two cups of coffee in case you stop by for a visit!  I think these Fostoria coffee cups are so beautiful!  I only have two, so I am always on the look out for more.
Have a wonderful rest of the week friends!  I am packing up my muffins and hitting the road tomorrow with my parents. We are going to Virginia to visit our oldest son and their first grandson.  You can be assured that I will be on the hunt for a few more Fostoria cups and saucers as well as other antique treasures.  However, the most important thing I will be doing is enjoying time with my big boy!

A Perfect Pumpkin Project!

I recently made my mom a bedazzled monogram pumpkin.  She has always liked my half pumpkin which I shared with you last month.  My Monogrammed Pumpkin was easy to create and I love the way it looks.  I decided to make my mom and dad a larger, whole pumpkin.  Here is what you will need for this simple project.

The Starting Line-Up:
One- Cream Pumpkin of Your Choice, Sold at Michael's Craft Stores
Martha Stewart Brushed Bronze Metallic Craft Paint
Foam Paint Brush
Ribbon
Peel and Stick Bedazzling Items

You have to admit that the cream pumpkin directly from the store is boring.  Let's add some life and character to this pumpkin!  Using a disposable bowl, pour a little paint in the bowl.  Wet the foam brush and squeeze out any excess water. Using long strokes, paint the surface of the pumpkin going in the direction of the grooves. Allow the paint to accumulate in the grooves, creating natural, darker areas. I placed my pumpkin on its side so that I could paint the bottom as I made the long strokes of paint.  
I allowed one side to dry then flipped it to the other and continued in that manner until the pumpkin was completely bronzed. Take a look at your pumpkin and add a little more paint to the grooves if needed.  Allow to completely dry.
Here comes the fun part! I always start with the monogram.  The monogram will be on a large sheet.  Carefully peel away the protective backing from the monogram.  The sticky part will be under the lettering only.
Carefully position the monogram on the pumpkin.  I have found that you can re-position if you are careful.  Once you have it in place, press down to adhere more securely.  
The next step is to adhere the scroll work to the pumpkin.  This is more difficult, but can be done with a little patience.  Decide where you want the scroll work before you pull off the protective backing. 

Carefully position the scroll work on the pumpkin. If you need to re-position, carefully remove the section and re-position it on the pumpkin. Lastly, you will need to attach a cute bow to the top.  I decided to go with this cute and simple black and white plaid bow.
My mom placed the pumpkin on a wreath of fall berries in her dining room window and it looks adorable! This is an easy project which can be completed in an hour.  To get you in the mood for this cute fall project, light a fall scented candle and sip a cup of pumpkin flavored coffee while working on your pumpkin!  Happy crafting everyone!

Family, Football, and A Furry Friend

This Labor Day weekend, we packed the car with lots of food, a chainsaw, and a Mississippi State cowbell. Strange combination, but we had a plan.  We were headed to Starkville to help our son with his new-old house and to see the opening game for Mississippi State.  Our first stop was in Hattiesburg for the monthly Lucky Rabbit.  I LOVE this place!  It is a big warehouse filled with delightful booths.  It's only open the first Thursday-Sunday of each month.  Each month you can find different items.  I purchased several signs and a couple of other things.  I fell in love with the set of furniture in the right middle photo.  It was painted a cream with light pink accents.  It would be perfect for a little girls room.  There are so many wonderful things from vintage to antiques. If you are ever in the area, you must stop by the Lucky Rabbit.

Game day morning was incredibly hot...incredibly hot.  It is worth saying twice.  Here we are on the Mississippi State Drill Field before we were drenched in sweat! We are not selfie proficient and had to squint into the sun!! This was around 10:00 am and I think it was 110 degrees already.  I exaggerate, but the heat warning for game was 100 degrees.  We were covered in sunscreen, carried frozen bottles of water, and wished we had those little fans you see at Disney World!
Let's fast forward to after the game... the less said about the game, the better!  I don't know if you read the post about our son's home, but the walls were orange.  Here is a link to my last post: Help! Kitchen Nightmare!  There was lots of orange and a lighter tangerine in the bedrooms.  I used to like orange, but have acquired a great dislike for it due to all the orange in this home.  Here are a few before and afters of two different rooms.  The Olympus White from Sherwin-Williams brought new life to this old house. It's so clean and crisp.  I am anxious to see the walls with a few pieces of art work.
We stopped painting to drive about 20 minutes from Starkville and eat at a charming diner called Pap's Place.  Our son and one of his roommates were eager to eat there. It was a treat.  Nothing fancy, but some of the best food can be found in "nothing fancy" places.  This diner is listed in the top 10 places in Mississippi to eat and people in Mississippi know how to cook, so this is a definite honor.  Each table has a jug of sweet tea, unsweet tea, and water.  It's a help yourself kinda place.  I had some of the best chicken and dumplings I have ever eaten and the catfish was superb.  I think I moaned after each new food was placed in my mouth. Everything was homemade and delicious! I'm doubling up on my exercise this week!

We finally rolled ourselves out of the diner and headed back to our paint brushes.  Most of the remainder of the weekend and into Monday was spent with either a paint brush or chain saw in our hands.  It was definitely a labor of love Labor Day!  After church on Sunday, this beautiful Siberian Husky became a new member of my son's home!  Her name is Sadie and she is 7 months old.  She was owned by another family who didn't have much time for her.  My son fell in love with her!  Sadie is a beautiful dog and is adjusting to her new owner and his roommates.  Woo-hoo, more people to play with!
We were so tired by the time we pulled out of his driveway for the 4 hour drive home.  Climbing up and down a ladder to paint dentil molding was tough on these legs of mine!  After a good nights rest, I was thrilled to begin a new Bible study at church.  When I retired, people would always ask what I was going to do with my time.  My answer was always the same.  I was going to join the Tuesday morning Bible study and on Tuesday, I did.  Our group is a mixture of women from their 20's - 70's.  I love our group already! We are doing Beth Moore's new study, Entrusted. I am excited about what the Lord will reveal to me through the study of His word.
Our Labor Day holiday was a labor of love.  What better way to spend a three day holiday than with one you love helping to make a strange house a home?  How was your Labor Day?

Tastes of Autumn: Pumpkin Muffins and Pumpkin Coffee Creamer

I featured delicious pumpkin muffins and homemade pumpkin coffee creamer on Tuesday's blogpost, Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice.  As promised, I am following up today with the recipes. Let's start with the pumpkin muffins.  I must warn you that these are not for the faint of heart!  Make these when you can share them with a group! I saw this recipe on the internet several times and had to try it.
The Starting Line-Up
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
2 eggs
1- 15 ounce can of pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
1/2 cup coconut oil, melted (can also use vegetable oil)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Line a 12 cup muffin pan with liners or spray with Pam.

Mix all dry ingredients in a medium bowl, whisking to combine.

In a smaller bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin puree, coconut oil and vanilla.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.  Stir just until everything is incorporated.

Using a large scoop, fill the muffin cups to nearly full.  Don't worry, they will get done!

Bake the muffins at 375 degrees for 20-22 minutes.  At the end of the baking time, check the muffins with a toothpick.  The toothpick should come out clean.  Recipe makes 12 large muffins.

* Note:  If you have never cooked with coconut oil, you must try it!  It is a solid, so you will need to melt the oil before incorporating it into the batter.  Many bakers will tell you that coconut oil gives baked goods a certain lightness that does not occur with other oils.  There are also numerous health benefits to using coconut oil.

Now for the pumpkin creamer!  This creamer is a delicious way to add the flavor of the season without taking out a loan for all that fall flavored coffee!  I must confess that I had a little carry over guilt from sampling the muffins!  I wanted a lighter creamer, so used I used almond milk.  For a really decadent creamer, substitute half and half.  It is really...really yummy with half and half.  The charm of this recipe is that you can alter it to meet your dietary needs.

The Starting Line-Up
2 cups of almond milk, skim milk, whole milk, or half and half
3 tablespoons of pumpkin puree (do not use pumpkin pie filling)
2 tablespoons of maple syrup or sugar (I used maple syrup)
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
2 sticks of cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions
Whisk first 6 ingredients together in a sauce pan.
Heat until steaming, but do not boil
Whisk in vanilla. Add the cinnamon sticks.  Allow the flavors to mingle for a bit.
Taste and adjust the spices and sweetness to your liking.
Remove the cinnamon sticks.
Pour into a cream pitcher and enjoy with your coffee.
Store the remainder in the refrigerator for up to a week.

If you use almond milk or skim milk, the mixture will be thinner.  After storing in the fridge or even sitting on your coffee bar for awhile, you will notice that it is thicker.  Of course, a dollop of whipped cream on top would be scrumptious!
