Snow Day and Superbowl Party Food

Yes, you read correctly!  The Mississippi Gulf Coast is preparing for sleet, another couple of days of icy roads, and SNOW!!  I do know a thing or two about snow.  I spend some of my childhood in Rockland, Maine.  However, the MS Gulf Coast does not see snow too often.  Schools are closed for two days due to the icy road conditions.  Our Emergency Management System is prepared for hurricanes (and they do a fabulous job protecting the citizens of the MS Gulf Coast), but icy roads along with our and many bridges spanning bayous and waterways cause dangerous driving conditions.  As I am writing this, I am looking out the window into our woods.  The rain is gently falling and by this afternoon, it may be snow.  Woo Hoo! What a terrific time to do a little blog writing!

WARNING:  I am going to confess to a blog crime.  Or at least by some bloggers, it is considered a crime.  I am going to cut and copy from a previous blog post I wrote on a favorite appetizer.    I am sure that a jury of my peers will be gathering to decide my punishment.  But wait, who came up with these rules?  Does it really matter if you re-share a favorite post?  I have never understood that blogging rule.  I have two favorite appetizer recipes.  Why would I make up other favorite appetizers just because I already posted about these recipes?  Okay, I feel better after confessing my blog crime. It's almost Superbowl time, so let's get cooking!

This recipe is not for cholesterol watchers of the world, but is a treat a few times a year.  This will be a sure hit at your Superbowl Party, especially with the guys.  These are my Bacon Cheddar Pinwheels.  Don't they look yummy?  I wish we had smell-a-blog!

Here is the Starting Line-Up...I know the ingredient list is unusual, but trust me!
20 slices of White Bread (crusts trimmed)
1 can Condensed Milk
1/4 cup of Prepared Mustard
1 teaspoon of Worcestershire Sauce
1.5 pounds of thin or regular Bacon (Do not use the thick variety)
8 ounces of Sharp Cheddar Cheese, grated (Regular or 2%)

I found that the giant loaf of Bunny bread is the best  for making this recipe.  You want a bread that is square and uniform in shape.  Trim the crusts from the bread and roll each piece flat with a rolling pin. An electric knife works well too.
 Nice and flat.
Combine condensed milk, mustard and Worcestershire in a small bowl.  Isn't it a shame that you can never get all of the creamy goodness out of a can of condensed milk?  I give you permission to take another spoon and savor the remains yourself!  I am nice like that! I have a friend that will eat an entire can of condensed milk whenever she feels like it.  No excuses either! She's brave.
Cut the bacon in half.  Lay three halves touching on a flat surface.
Place a slice of bread on top.  Spread one rounded tablespoon of condensed milk mixture on the bread. Sprinkle one tablespoon of grated cheese on top. Feel free not to measure the cheese.  I never do.
 Roll up...

Secure with three toothpicks, one thru each bacon slice.
At this point you may either refrigerate until you are ready to bake them or bake immediately.  Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  With a very sharp knife, make pinwheels by cutting between the bacon slices.
Bake 30 minutes, preferably on a broiler pan with a rack.  If you use a broiler pan, I would suggest lining the pan for easier clean-up and spraying the cooking surface with Pam. Normally, I place parchment paper on cookie sheets and bake that way.  If your bacon is very fatty, I would suggest the broiler pan.
After 30 minutes, you will end up with a delicious pan of Bacon Cheddar Pinwheels.  Your children and spouse will be hovering around as they smell the delicious aromas wafting from your kitchen.  Immediately remove the Bacon Cheddar Pinwheels from the broiler tray, remove the toothpick, and place on a platter.
Pick one up and take a bite...close your eyes and savor the goodness!
Tips for Bacon Cheddar Pinwheels (Not in my previous post):
1.  Not all bacon is the same size.  I have made them with 2 strips of bacon per 1 piece of bread.
2.  It does make a large pinwheel.  After baking, I have also cut each one again.  If you do this, lay the flat
end down of the serving platter, with the end pictured above sticking up.  It makes the perfect bite.
3.  These can be refrigerated and reheated either in the micorwave or oven.
4.  Yes, I have eaten them for breakfast...also for a midnight snack!

Stop by tomorrow for another great Superbowl recipe.  By the way, I did alter some of my wording, so I hope that my offense is a minor one!  Still waiting on snow, but ready for some hot cocoa!

  1. These look so yummy, but the sweetened condensed milk throws me. I'd have to eat one of these first. Besides, I'm not going to make a whole batch just for myself, that would not do at all.

Enjoy your snow if you get it. This far south, we've only had snow once, and it was early morning and my husband and I missed it as it was gone when we woke up.

Thank you for visiting my blog and your kind comments.

I love the name of your blog, and look forward to reading more.

    1. When I share this recipe, everyone is thrown off my the condensed milk. Just trust me...they are fabulous! We are having a "slizzrd" now. Heavy sleet. It does look beautiful, but I am hoping for the soft, floaty stuff! Thanks for the visit and following along. Stop by tomorrow for another great appetizer!

  4. This looks like a delicious appetizer! At first I was thrown off by the condensed milk, but then realized that together with the mustard and Worcestershire sauce, it became a "glaze". to go with the bacon. It would be excellent to make for a gathering, otherwise my husband and I would eat them all--yikes!

    1. Most people are surprised by the condensed milk combination, but it is what makes this recipe. I only make these when there is a crowd...for obvious reasons. My husband and I could eat them all too! Thank you so much for visiting. Come back soon!

    1. Hi Laura,
Thanks for your visit and following along! If you decide to try these, let me know how they are received. Most people will ask what is that slightly sweet taste in the pinwheel and will be surprised when you tell them. As I told another visitor, I am asked to bring them to almost any get together. I will be making them this Sunday!

  9. I hope you are planning some bacon cheddar pinwheels for this Sunday! You know how our entire family loves them They are always a huge success and I am already getting hungry for them. I am happy that all the children on the MS Gulf Coast had a chance to experience the wintry mix of snow and sleet the past few days. I actually sometimes miss our Maine winters with all the beautiful snowfall. Mom

    1. Thank you Mom! Yes, I will be making a batch of the pinwheels. Of course the boys will be upset that they were not here to enjoy them! The snow has been an unexpected pleasure and apart from the travel conditions, has added so much beauty to this otherwise dull part of the year.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I had planned to share my new front door decor, but alas, like many residents of the MS Gulf Coast, all  loose outside objects have been secured as we await the arrival of Hurricane Isaac. Instead, I thought I would share with you a set of my favorite dinnerware.  I began collecting Memory Lane ironstone many years ago, but my love of the pattern began when I was just a little girl.  My Grandma Mercer had one dinner plate.  I imagine that she picked it up either in a box of laundry soap or as a reward for shopping at the IGA of Chattahoochee, Florida.  I came to love her one plate.  My grandmother would make sure that my food was served on that plate no matter what other dinnerware pattern was set on her table!  When she passed away, I was blessed to receive her dining room set which included a lovely buffet with glass knobs along with the matching table and chairs.  I also received my Memory Lane plate. During my search for more pattern pieces, I found out that Memory Lane is consi

Fun Fall Door Decor

I am ready for the heat of summer to be over and the cool breezes of fall to head our way.  My sister called me the other day and said she wanted to pull out her autumn decorations and to that I say "Amen, Sista"! We both can't wait to say, "Happy Fall Ya'll"!! In the meantime, I need to update my fall door decor and have been looking for a few, fresh ideas.  Better Homes and Gardens had some wonderful fall wreath ideas.  I adore this unusual "wreath" made from a rake. Who said a wreath must be round? Etsy and Pinterest have an abundance of wreath ideas including several swags to use on your harvest door. Another cute idea from Better Homes and Gardens. It makes me think of  warm apple crisp topped with a dollop of whipped cream!   Yum!  Or how about those wonderfully apple scented candles?  Love those! Monograms are all the rage.  I think this would be a simple wreath to make.  Raise your hand if you like simple projects! Super cu

Thanksgiving Dinnerware to Grace Any Table

Southern Living recently published an article entitled "Turkey Plate Special" chronicling the origins of certain patterns.  Who knew that when Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, we would end up with beautiful transferware patterns honoring the official bird of Thanksgiving?  I was excited to see my pattern, "His Majesty" by Johnson Brothers in the article.  We lovingly call these our Traveling Turkey Dishes.  Click  here  to find out why! I set our Reading Room   table with His Majesty for a quick peek at this beautiful pattern.  I love my "Traveling Turkey Dishes".  It is a joy to get them out and use them throughout November.  I also love this old table.  It has the scars of a well lived life and reminds me so much of my sweet grandmother who loved it as much as I do. A close up of His Majesty shows the lovely colors of the season.  I don't own the turkey platter, but it is on my wish list! (Replacements) Anot
