Autumn Splendor for the Hearth

I dearly love this time of year.  Autumn...the word excites the senses with vivid colors and wonderful smells. I think of candy apples, warm cider, hay rides, apple pies, and the unforgettable smell of brisk, autumn air. I am so thankful to the Lord for the beauty of this season.

"To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven" Ecclesiastes 3:1.

As the days grow shorter and the nights cooler, the hearth becomes an important focal point in our homes. It's a place where the family gathers and where memories are made. Why not make your hearth a signature statement by creating a lovely autumn display?  I enjoy changing my display often.  This is my September-October mantel. I was incredibly bummed when my 11 inch mercury glass pumpkin skittered off the mantel and crashed to the floor.  I searched the internet and local stores for a replacement.  Luckily, I found one that blends in and will do for now.  My display features mercury glass pumpkins, a lantern lighted by a candle, a few books, a clock, and a little owl. A garland with fairy lights add a slight twinkle to the display.   It's still too warm to light a fire, so I put a few battery operated candles in the fireplace to create a warm glow.
Life and Linda created a mantel with frames.  Love this idea.
I would adore an outdoor fireplace. This inviting setting is from Better Homes and Garden.
Doesn't the fireplace in Neil Hill's blog look cozy?  What a fantastic place to curl up with a mug of spiced cider. The deer looks like he rules the roost! Notice the equestrian pillows.
Another terrific idea. The lanterns are especially nice.
Here is another outdoor fireplace.  This one compliments of Southern Living.
Sondra Lynn at Home has a beautiful fall mantel.  So many items in natural tones.
The Seasonal Home decorates with the vivid colors of fall.
Finding Home selected a very unexpected color palette for the autumn mantel.  The creams, blues, greens, and peacock feathers work well together
Serendipity Refined blends silver, copper, creams, and browns fabulously.  All the colors are enhanced by the gorgeous wall color.
I love the many levels in this sweet mantel from Denise in Bloom.  The use of the various heights add movement to the display.
The Frugal Homemaker decorates from the mantel down to the hearth.  This allows the eye to wander and enhances the display.
How are you decorating your mantel for this beautiful season?  Please jot me a note and tell me about your display.

    1. Lorrie,
I like the blue, teal and cream mantel too! I am going to do a Thanksgiving one with muted colors. I might have to add some of the peacock colors to my plan. Thanks for stopping by and come back soon!

  3. You have created an elegant mantle in your home and I enjoyed all the other examples shared. Unfortunately the small house we retired in doesn't have a mantle for me to decorate and I miss this focal point for seasonal changes.
Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday, I hope you'll come back again.

    1. Thank you Judith! I was so sad to break my favorite pumpkin:( I did get some inspiration from the mantels featured in this post. There are so many creative people out there. I have noticed smaller homes with a mantel on the wall...without the fireplace. That could be ideal for you. I will be back to Mosaic Monday! Thanks for hosting.

  5. What a lovely display of autumn for the mantel piece. It's comforting and cozy to draw near the fireplace this time of year. And what visions of loveliness to enjoy as you do.

    Beautiful post...

  6. Oh, Lynda, I'm so sorry about your glass pumpkin plate...I know how that hurts, In my flurry preparing Easter dinner I broke a family heirloom bowl. I tried to make l.ght of in in front of company but my heart ached,

These hearths are gorgeous-wish I had the room to have wing chairs on each side! I need a few pumpkins and I'll be finished. I like to add little by little until Thanksgiving...keeps it fresh.

Thanks for such a nice comment today. What a lovely person you are! :)

    1. It is awful to break an heirloom. It makes you want to get out the super glue and get to work! I enjoy my wing backs by the fireplace...especially when the fire is roaring. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    1. Hi Stacey,
Thank you for the sweet comments. My oldest son designed our double mantel. I wanted to find an antique mantel; however, fireplaces back then were often small. We looked at a terrific salvage place in New Orleans to gather ideas. Our son sat down and drew up the plans and our cabinet guy built it. as far as decorating mantels, I like to get inspiration from the internet. Often, I think, "Why didn't I think of that?"! I bet your mantel is lovely. I will be sharing Christmas mantels, so stop back by.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I had planned to share my new front door decor, but alas, like many residents of the MS Gulf Coast, all  loose outside objects have been secured as we await the arrival of Hurricane Isaac. Instead, I thought I would share with you a set of my favorite dinnerware.  I began collecting Memory Lane ironstone many years ago, but my love of the pattern began when I was just a little girl.  My Grandma Mercer had one dinner plate.  I imagine that she picked it up either in a box of laundry soap or as a reward for shopping at the IGA of Chattahoochee, Florida.  I came to love her one plate.  My grandmother would make sure that my food was served on that plate no matter what other dinnerware pattern was set on her table!  When she passed away, I was blessed to receive her dining room set which included a lovely buffet with glass knobs along with the matching table and chairs.  I also received my Memory Lane plate. During my search for more pattern pieces, I found out that Memory Lane is consi

Thanksgiving Dinnerware to Grace Any Table

Southern Living recently published an article entitled "Turkey Plate Special" chronicling the origins of certain patterns.  Who knew that when Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, we would end up with beautiful transferware patterns honoring the official bird of Thanksgiving?  I was excited to see my pattern, "His Majesty" by Johnson Brothers in the article.  We lovingly call these our Traveling Turkey Dishes.  Click  here  to find out why! I set our Reading Room   table with His Majesty for a quick peek at this beautiful pattern.  I love my "Traveling Turkey Dishes".  It is a joy to get them out and use them throughout November.  I also love this old table.  It has the scars of a well lived life and reminds me so much of my sweet grandmother who loved it as much as I do. A close up of His Majesty shows the lovely colors of the season.  I don't own the turkey platter, but it is on my wish list! (Replacements) Anot

Fun Fall Door Decor

I am ready for the heat of summer to be over and the cool breezes of fall to head our way.  My sister called me the other day and said she wanted to pull out her autumn decorations and to that I say "Amen, Sista"! We both can't wait to say, "Happy Fall Ya'll"!! In the meantime, I need to update my fall door decor and have been looking for a few, fresh ideas.  Better Homes and Gardens had some wonderful fall wreath ideas.  I adore this unusual "wreath" made from a rake. Who said a wreath must be round? Etsy and Pinterest have an abundance of wreath ideas including several swags to use on your harvest door. Another cute idea from Better Homes and Gardens. It makes me think of  warm apple crisp topped with a dollop of whipped cream!   Yum!  Or how about those wonderfully apple scented candles?  Love those! Monograms are all the rage.  I think this would be a simple wreath to make.  Raise your hand if you like simple projects! Super cu
