Vintage Thanksgiving Greetings!

It's been a glorious day here at Still Woods Farmhouse.  The last of the pumpkin pies are in the oven and smell wonderful. A pot of beef stew is bubbling away on the stove for dinner.  A large pan of cornbread for cornbread dressing is heading in the oven next.  I can't wait to cut a square hot from the oven, slather it with butter and drizzle on a little molasses. What a treat!

I wanted to share with you a few vintage Thanksgiving greetings and magazine covers.  Maybe while you are waiting for your pies to come out of the oven, you can relax with a cup of tea or coffee and  enjoy these images from yesteryear.

I know this mamma is happy to have her sailor home for Thanksgiving!
Please say it isn't so!  I confess...I did love these Banquet dinners when I was little.  Whenever we had them, they seemed like such a treat.
A simmering-talking pot!
This adorable girl is eyeing the turkey! I am curious about the article by Demaree Bees listed at the bottom of the cover!
Vintage cards are always wonderful expressions of art.  This one is no exception.
Wonder what this little Pilgrim is telling the chicken?
Another nostalgic Saturday Evening Post. What a difference in the football uniforms of today and those of 1928?
Hmmm...maybe they should have plucked and roasted the turkey first!
I have never had a pumpkin pecan pie.  How about any of you?
I guess home makers have been making pies for ages!
Anticipation...I am not so sure about that turkey!  Looks a little diseased.
Over the river and through the woods...
This is a 1914 edition of The Saturday Evening Post.
Lastly, I leave you with this beautiful card.
Many blessings to you and yours this Thanksgiving from
Lynda at Still Woods Farmhouse!

    1. Happy Thanksgiving Jane! I got a head start on all the baking and cooking. We are packing as much in during the next three days. I just "royal icing glued" together our little mini gingerbread village so that we can decorate those after dinner tomorrow. I won't get my boys back until close to Christmas, so we are doing our little tradition early! Whew...looking forward to relaxing with a cup of coffee and a slice of pumpkin pie!

    1. Good Morning Cindy! I forgot about the little brownie in the tray! My favorite was the berry cobbler "like" dessert. We would have to eat the other trays before we could touch the dessert tray. Thanks for bringing back a wonderful memory!

Give Me Life, Liberty and Homemade Ice Cream!

Are you looking for a fabulous ice cream recipe for a 4th of July celebration? Luckily, your search is over! I shared this ice cream recipe several years ago and it is a perfect time to share again. This is a traditional cooked custard recipe my dad has made for years.  It makes the most creamy, deliciousness that you will ever put in your mouth.  You can really taste the difference between a cooked ice cream and a non-cooked ice cream.  It doesn't take long to prepare this recipe and it is worth the little bit of effort you will put into it. In fact, I have all the ingredients sitting on the counter ready to make the custard.  I have to tell you that we often fight over who gets to lick the spoon and clean out the bowl! Let's look at the Starting Line-Up.  Just a few basic ingredients.   Please note that the ice cream salt in the picture is only for my ice cream freezer and not for the recipe!! If you are like me, I like the recipe all at once and...

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I had planned to share my new front door decor, but alas, like many residents of the MS Gulf Coast, all  loose outside objects have been secured as we await the arrival of Hurricane Isaac. Instead, I thought I would share with you a set of my favorite dinnerware.  I began collecting Memory Lane ironstone many years ago, but my love of the pattern began when I was just a little girl.  My Grandma Mercer had one dinner plate.  I imagine that she picked it up either in a box of laundry soap or as a reward for shopping at the IGA of Chattahoochee, Florida.  I came to love her one plate.  My grandmother would make sure that my food was served on that plate no matter what other dinnerware pattern was set on her table!  When she passed away, I was blessed to receive her dining room set which included a lovely buffet with glass knobs along with the matching table and chairs.  I also received my Memory Lane plate. During my search for more pattern pieces...

A Treasure in the Vines....Waverly Plantation

Imagine a dream.  A dream in which you are wandering through the woods and discover a beautiful, long forgotten home.  A home which rises above jasmine vines wrapped tightly around graceful columns.  A home which has endured the ravages of rain, the heat of hot Mississippi summers, the infestation of bees and bats, and yet still retains the grace of a bygone era.  Such a dream came true for the Snow family. Robert and Donna Snow owned an antique store in Phildelphia, MS.  One day a salesman stopped by and told them that he had gotten lost down by the river and found a beautiful home, hidden in the woods near West Point, MS.  According to Melanie Snow, one of the Snow's children, her parents stayed up all night thinking about the home.  The next morning they told their children that they were going on an adventure, packed the kids in the car,  and off they went.  Imagine their delight when they discovered this beautiful home . . . Waverly....
