Laundry Room Make-Over

It was time.  Our laundry room needed a major re-do.  When we first moved in, I couldn't decide if I wanted cabinets installed at the top of the room.  As a temporary solution, we put in a long shelf for storage.  I made a toile curtain to cover the storage area and hide what I "stuck" up there. While it worked well, it also made the room appear top heavy.  Another obstacle was my grandmother's clothes press.  It seemed at home  in the laundry room, but it took up a lot of space.  So here is what my laundry room used to look like. I know...it's definitely cluttered.  In fact, I did an entire post about this crowded room...ugh!  Old Laundry Room
We also had the upper section of one of our china cabinets on top of the counter while the bottom of the china cabinet was moved upstairs to house DVD's.    The top of the cabinet was a great place for my collection of Christmas china.  It fit perfectly and I thought it was a pretty clever idea! The only problem was there was never enough room to fold clothes.
Needless to say, I couldn't stand it anymore.  My beloved clothes press seemed to be in the way, the toile curtain was oppressive and the top of my china cabinet was taking up too much room (and was missing its bottom).  So this is what I ended up with and I love it!
I shopped my own house for baskets and picked up a few at my favorite stores.  The baskets contain all the items that were loose on the shelf.  Now I know exactly where everything is located.  An added bonus!
I have room to fold clothes and still have space for little Luke Bailey's food.
We brought down the bottom to the china cabinet and put the two pieces back together.  They are happier that way!  The clothes press was moved to another location and the slimmer, Christmas china cabinet took it's place. I love seeing my collection of Nikko Christmastime Christmas china all year long!
I also tackled the storage drawers and organized every little inch of the place.  It's amazing how much room you have when you organize!
Lastly, decorating with the things I love makes this room a happy place to do laundry.  I still have my vintage laundry signs above the washer and dryer.  Other items in the room include this bottle of blueing which belonged to my paternal great-grandmother and the skirt hemming tool which belonged to my maternal grandmother.
Another favorite sign hangs above my farmhouse sink!
I bought the Mason jar and vintage iron at an antique store in a small, Amish town in Pennsylvania.  I collect loose pocket change in the Mason jar.  Maybe one day I'll have enough to buy a pair of shoes! The jug belonged to my maternal grandfather.
This sweet, little cross stitch sits on the china cabinet.  Love the saying...just wish there were more cool breezes blowing our way!  It's been awfully hot!
So, how does the new and improved laundry room look?  Here is a side by side comparison looking into the room.
I'm happy with the results.  I have one art project in the works for the laundry room and hopefully, I can share that with you later.

  4. Well, I finally realized I could make comments if I opened your posts completely, instead of reading them just in my email previewer!! I've always wanted to comment and it never would work! With that being said, I love your make over. Glad you kept the china cabinet, for a minute there I thought you had removed it. I love that you can display your Christmas dishes all year long! Looks great.

    1. Hi Trisha! So glad you found a way to comment. I love having Christmas all year in at least one room of the house even if it is just in a china cabinet. I am thinking about painting the china cabinet, but I know I will meet with a great deal of resistance from Mr. New Knee!

  8. You did a great job on your laundry room, Lynda! I think you were smart to clear off the countertop by the sink. Amazing how much bigger the room looks now!

I just love all your vintage laundry items. I've often wished I had a few of the things my mom had when I was growing up.

Thanks so much for joining the Grace at Home party!

    1. Thanks Richella! I do love the more open look and especially having more room to fold clothes! My mom does not like antiques or vintage items and would always pass over any items offered to her. Luckily, she always let me store items from my grandparents and even great-grandmother. Now I can display them in my own home. Have a great rest of the week!

  9. It makes such a difference to do laundry in a room we are happy in, and your room turned out lovely. I recently purchased a skirt hemming tool, but at the time had no idea what it was - I just liked the look of it and thought I could use it as a photo holder - but now I know thanks to you!

    1. Hi Lala,
I like your idea of a photo holder! I think I'm going to dig up a picture of my grandmother sewing on her foot pedal Singer and put it with the skirt hemmer. I didn't know what is was either. My mom had to tell me. I hope you are having a terrific day and thank you for stopping by the farmhouse!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I had planned to share my new front door decor, but alas, like many residents of the MS Gulf Coast, all  loose outside objects have been secured as we await the arrival of Hurricane Isaac. Instead, I thought I would share with you a set of my favorite dinnerware.  I began collecting Memory Lane ironstone many years ago, but my love of the pattern began when I was just a little girl.  My Grandma Mercer had one dinner plate.  I imagine that she picked it up either in a box of laundry soap or as a reward for shopping at the IGA of Chattahoochee, Florida.  I came to love her one plate.  My grandmother would make sure that my food was served on that plate no matter what other dinnerware pattern was set on her table!  When she passed away, I was blessed to receive her dining room set which included a lovely buffet with glass knobs along with the matching table and chairs.  I also received my Memory Lane plate. During my search for more pattern pieces, I found out that Memory Lane is consi

Fun Fall Door Decor

I am ready for the heat of summer to be over and the cool breezes of fall to head our way.  My sister called me the other day and said she wanted to pull out her autumn decorations and to that I say "Amen, Sista"! We both can't wait to say, "Happy Fall Ya'll"!! In the meantime, I need to update my fall door decor and have been looking for a few, fresh ideas.  Better Homes and Gardens had some wonderful fall wreath ideas.  I adore this unusual "wreath" made from a rake. Who said a wreath must be round? Etsy and Pinterest have an abundance of wreath ideas including several swags to use on your harvest door. Another cute idea from Better Homes and Gardens. It makes me think of  warm apple crisp topped with a dollop of whipped cream!   Yum!  Or how about those wonderfully apple scented candles?  Love those! Monograms are all the rage.  I think this would be a simple wreath to make.  Raise your hand if you like simple projects! Super cu

Thanksgiving Dinnerware to Grace Any Table

Southern Living recently published an article entitled "Turkey Plate Special" chronicling the origins of certain patterns.  Who knew that when Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, we would end up with beautiful transferware patterns honoring the official bird of Thanksgiving?  I was excited to see my pattern, "His Majesty" by Johnson Brothers in the article.  We lovingly call these our Traveling Turkey Dishes.  Click  here  to find out why! I set our Reading Room   table with His Majesty for a quick peek at this beautiful pattern.  I love my "Traveling Turkey Dishes".  It is a joy to get them out and use them throughout November.  I also love this old table.  It has the scars of a well lived life and reminds me so much of my sweet grandmother who loved it as much as I do. A close up of His Majesty shows the lovely colors of the season.  I don't own the turkey platter, but it is on my wish list! (Replacements) Anot
