Re-purposing a Card Catalog

I hope this finds you and your family healthy and safe.  During these unusual times, I've spent some extra time completing a long to-do list.  One project included my library card catalog.  My husband gave me this card catalog many years ago.  It has served many purposes over the time it has lived at Still Woods. Many!!
 How have I used thee? Let me count the ways!  

 It has served as a jewelry storage, a kitchen island (one of my favorites), undergarment storage, scarf storage, Santa's Candy Shoppe (drawers full of candy), and now it is serving as an organizational tool for our Reading Room. I think it has finally found its purpose. Woo-hoo!! I love having one, central location for many of the items that often end up here and there. I hate searching for items all over the house.  Let me show you what I've done.

 To start with, I like the beautiful, original maple wood of the card catalog. I don't think chalk paint will ever touch it; however, I may re-stain the cabinet.  The drawer fronts had stickers and scratches from its previous life, so repairs need to be made. Feel free to give me any suggestions you may have. I'm open to ideas!  
First, we relocated the card catalog to this dead space in the Reading Room.Then I made labels for all the items I wanted to go in the cabinet.  I had some leftover drawers, so decided to add a few "unusual" labels.  My niece got the biggest kick out of these unusual drawers and is writing a short story about the card catalog.  See if you can find the unusual ones!
Who wouldn't love to open a drawer and have beautiful, fluffy clouds floating out or cute puppies? I also have a drawer for cuddly kittens! 

 After the drawers were labeled, I started filling them up.  I LOVE telling Mr Still Woods where he can find the scissors, batteries, etc! No drawing him a map..no searching the house!
Need colored pencils or note pads?  No problem! I also have a "junk" drawer of sorts labeled "This and That".
After writing this post, I realized that I need to give an update to the Reading Room Update.  It looks totally different! I'll leave that for another day.

    I love this. I think you have definitely found the best use for it. You might only have to restrain the drawers if you can find a good stain.

      Thank you, Sandy! That is a good idea to only do the drawer fronts. I did think about painting the drawer fronts only, but am not sure I would like the look. I need to look for some done that way. Have a terrific Thurday! It is Thursday, isn't it?!!

I had planned to share my new front door decor, but alas, like many residents of the MS Gulf Coast, all  loose outside objects have been secured as we await the arrival of Hurricane Isaac. Fun Fall Door Decor

I am ready for the heat of summer to be over and the cool breezes of fall to head our way.  My sister called me the other day and said she wanted to pull out her autumn decorations and to that I say "Amen, Sista"! We both can't wait to say, "Happy Fall Ya'll"!! In the meantime, I need to update my fall door decor and have been looking for a few, fresh ideas.  Better Homes and Gardens had some wonderful fall wreath ideas.  I adore this unusual "wreath" made from a rake. Who said a wreath must be round? Etsy and Pinterest have an abundance of wreath ideas including several swags to use on your harvest door. Another cute idea from Better Homes and Gardens. It makes me think of  warm apple crisp topped with a dollop of whipped cream!   Yum!  Or how about those wonderfully apple scented candles?  Love those! Thanksgiving Dinnerware to Grace Any Table

Southern Living recently published an article entitled "Turkey Plate Special" chronicling the origins of certain patterns.  Who knew that when Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, we would end up with beautiful transferware patterns honoring the official bird of Thanksgiving?  I was excited to see my pattern, "His Majesty" by Johnson Brothers in the article.  We lovingly call these our Traveling Turkey Dishes.  Click  here  to find out why! I set our Reading Room   table with His Majesty for a quick peek at this beautiful pattern.  I love my "Traveling Turkey Dishes".  It is a joy to get them out and use them throughout November.  I also love this old table.  It has the scars of a well lived life and reminds me so much of my sweet grandmother who loved it as much as I do.
