Let's Do A Little Vintage Christmas Shopping!

Last year, I wrote a blog post about vintage Christmas ads...Vintage Christmas Shopping  I love the color and detail in vintage ads.  I saved a few from last year to share with you this year.  Let's have a Girls' Night Out and do a little vintage shopping!

This has to be one of my favorites.  Any soldier coming home for Christmas is a special gift.  The ad from Greyhound Bus Lines captures the excitement of the moment.
Vintage Coke ads always feature a jolly St. Nick with rosy cheeks. This ad caught my eye.  My husband is an avid train collector.
Plymouth's 1950's ad looks just like a Norman Rockwell painting!  He must have been a Plymouth fan!  We had a Plymouth when I was in junior high.  It was the size of a boat!
Mom, this ad is for you!  For years, I gave my mother Evening in Paris.  I loved the beautiful color of the bottles.  My mother would wear it proudly.  I found out many years later that she hated the scent!  If you have the time, head over to my blog post on Evening in Paris.
Now this is an old one from 1920.  Tinker Toys certainly have been around a long time. My boys loved their sets of Tinker Toys.
I know some of my Still Woods Farmhouse friends remember days of stockings with the black seam down the back.  It must have been hard to keep them straight!  Do you think they will ever come back in style?
Someone is up to a little mischief in this 1953 David Lockhart drawing!
This 1948 Maxwell House coffee ad is delightful! My dad has always said that the best coffee is made in a stove top peculator. Can't you smell the coffee?  It's good to the last drop!
Who wants a 1956 Cadillac for Christmas?!   Doesn't this handsome gentleman look like Carey Grant?
"You'll shoot your eye out" comes to mind with this ad!

Dubble Bubble still makes a great stocking gift!
This ad by the Tire A Rubber Company promotes the purchase of war bonds as a Christmas gift.  Obviously a wonderfully, patriotic company.
A 1949 television or radio makes a terrific gift.  "They'll fondly remember for years..." Do you remember when a television was a piece of furniture as well as entertainment?
Look at all the color and details in this 7 Up ad.  Just beautiful!
Guaranteed to give you a "lovelier leg complexion" at only $1.30 a pair!  I bet this ad caught the eye of a few men! If you search for vintage ads, you will find quite a few for stockings.

Lastly, I'll leave you with one of my favorite ads.  This one is from 1948.  Love that lipstick!

Blessings from Still Woods Farmhouse!

  2. I LOVE having the seam in the back of my stockings!! What I HATED was wearing the garder that held up the stockings. Those two hooks in the back hurt/pinched so much when sitting in the wooden pews in Church. I got into soooooo much trouble one time because I took my stockings off before church.
Love alll the old advertisements!! We've come a Long Way Baby!!

    1. Now Suzan, you do not look like you could have ever worn stockings with seams! Maybe if the seam comes back, the garter will not! I bet taking your stockings off before you left church is equal to my boys removing their ties before they left church!

    1. Hi Deb! Thanks for dropping by and taking a gander at my ads. I decorate with vintage laundry ads in my laundry room and vintage movie ads in our tv room. I have a blog post somewhere about that. I am fairly new to blogging so it would have to be last year. If you get a chance, look back and check out the laundry ads. Have a great day!

  4. I love every one of these ads! I have seen many of them before. I remember thinking that my mom's generation was so proper and old fashioned and then I caught a glimpse of some of the old ads and realized that maybe they weren't so proper and well behaved after all! ;) Happy Holidays!

    1. I agree Kim! There are quite a few "not so proper" ads out there. I was also amazed at the numerous Christmas cigarette ads. Nothing like giving a carton of Camels for Christmas!
Thanks for stopping by and Merry Christmas!

  10. Great ads!! I think the girl with "Cary" looks like a young Marilyn Monroe. And, yes, stockings with seams were back in in the early 80s-- I had a pair (I missed the first go around!!).

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I had planned to share my new front door decor, but alas, like many residents of the MS Gulf Coast, all  loose outside objects have been secured as we await the arrival of Hurricane Isaac. Instead, I thought I would share with you a set of my favorite dinnerware.  I began collecting Memory Lane ironstone many years ago, but my love of the pattern began when I was just a little girl.  My Grandma Mercer had one dinner plate.  I imagine that she picked it up either in a box of laundry soap or as a reward for shopping at the IGA of Chattahoochee, Florida.  I came to love her one plate.  My grandmother would make sure that my food was served on that plate no matter what other dinnerware pattern was set on her table!  When she passed away, I was blessed to receive her dining room set which included a lovely buffet with glass knobs along with the matching table and chairs.  I also received my Memory Lane plate. During my search for more pattern pieces, I found out that Memory Lane is consi

Fun Fall Door Decor

I am ready for the heat of summer to be over and the cool breezes of fall to head our way.  My sister called me the other day and said she wanted to pull out her autumn decorations and to that I say "Amen, Sista"! We both can't wait to say, "Happy Fall Ya'll"!! In the meantime, I need to update my fall door decor and have been looking for a few, fresh ideas.  Better Homes and Gardens had some wonderful fall wreath ideas.  I adore this unusual "wreath" made from a rake. Who said a wreath must be round? Etsy and Pinterest have an abundance of wreath ideas including several swags to use on your harvest door. Another cute idea from Better Homes and Gardens. It makes me think of  warm apple crisp topped with a dollop of whipped cream!   Yum!  Or how about those wonderfully apple scented candles?  Love those! Monograms are all the rage.  I think this would be a simple wreath to make.  Raise your hand if you like simple projects! Super cu

Thanksgiving Dinnerware to Grace Any Table

Southern Living recently published an article entitled "Turkey Plate Special" chronicling the origins of certain patterns.  Who knew that when Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, we would end up with beautiful transferware patterns honoring the official bird of Thanksgiving?  I was excited to see my pattern, "His Majesty" by Johnson Brothers in the article.  We lovingly call these our Traveling Turkey Dishes.  Click  here  to find out why! I set our Reading Room   table with His Majesty for a quick peek at this beautiful pattern.  I love my "Traveling Turkey Dishes".  It is a joy to get them out and use them throughout November.  I also love this old table.  It has the scars of a well lived life and reminds me so much of my sweet grandmother who loved it as much as I do. A close up of His Majesty shows the lovely colors of the season.  I don't own the turkey platter, but it is on my wish list! (Replacements) Anot
