Putting On a Little Red, White, and Blue

Patriotic decorating is a fantastic way to display your American pride from Memorial Day until the 4th of July. I begin decorating early in May.  Of course, no self respecting farmhouse is complete without bunting falling gracefully from the windows.   The cloth bunting tends to be a little pricey, so I shop the "after" sales.  I probably picked each cloth bunting up for no more than $5.00 each.  Patriotic and thrifty!  Using the large, suction cups keeps the bunting up even in the strongest of winds.

One of my favorite decorations is this picture my youngest son took.  The American flag in the picture was flown over our nation's capital at the request of Congressman Gene Taylor.  The Bible is opened to Isaiah 40:31, "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."  Laying on the Bible is his Eagle Scout badge.  He framed each picture and gave them as gifts to the people who supported him along his path to the rank of Eagle Scout.  Special memories.
My dad is recovering from a recent surgery, so we want to keep him cool and comfortable.  We will be eating inside this year instead of under the oaks.  I think this table setting will do...red chargers, white Pfaltzgraff plates, blue plaid napkins, and of course a few stars for sparkle!

This little display is on a table in the kitchen.  I love the little chicken and milk bottle.
This is a little black bench which I picked up at a small shop in Foley, Alabama.  It's decorated with a patriotic basket to welcome our friends to the front doors of Still Woods.
These are the same wreaths I used last year, so I am itching to do a little updating, but for now, they will do!

This table usually sits under the front or back porch.  It likes to meander around and is a wonderful table for placing a well read book and offers a place to hold a glass of sweet iced tea on a hot, summer day.  I just love bandanas!

If you stopped by Still Woods at Christmas, you know that I collect nutcrackers.  Here is one of my patriotic nutcrackers displayed beside a "Liberty" plate.

Our reading room is painted a dark blue.  A perfect backdrop for a little patriotic decorating!  My favorite piece in this room is the vintage looking flag display on the table.

I purchased the flag display at this lovely store in Pigeon Forge, TN.  I took a short trip to the mountains in early June and was saddened to see that Rebecca's Thyme is no longer in business.  Isn't this the type of store that makes you want to stop and venture in?  So long, I will miss you!
Other than cloth bunting, no farmhouse is complete without a comfy swing for whiling away the warm summer evenings.  If this swing could talk, it would tell such wonderful tales.  We have had it for so long.  It still has the gnaw marks left by our precious 110 pound dog, Prancer, who is now in doggy heaven. It has swung fretting babies to sleep, been a perfect spot to spin a tale or two, held many a couple holding hands, and is a terrific spot for reading a book.   Today it is showing a little red, white, and blue with a comfy pillow. Perfect spot for an afternoon nap!

I bought two white window frames at a small antique store in D'Iberville, MS and haven't decided what to do with them.  For now, one of them lends a little character to a table set between two rocking chairs on the front porch.  Why don't you stop by and we can sit and chat a spell!

Happy 4th of July and Blessings from Still Woods Farmhouse!

  3. Hi, I really enjoyed your patriotic post. Great idea to buy the bunting after the 4th. Your porch looks beautiful with the bunting, rockers and hanging fern. I think our Independence Day celebrations will be rained out here. Lots of towns have cancelled or postponed the celebrations because of the rain. Hope you and your family have a fabulous fourth, with good weather. Thanks for stopping by and I'm a new follower of yours. :)

    1. Good Morning Linda,
Yep, that is the thing to do. I try to visit the craft stores, but also stores like Kohl's. I found all the bunting at Kohl's several years ago. Visited them on Wednesday and they had patriotic table runners, placemats, etc 65% off already! Hope you have good luck in finding a thing or two...or three! Thanks for visiting today and come back soon!

I love white as well. I have a large collection of milk glass and use it all the time. I didn't take pictures of much of my milk glass for this post, but I have flags and flowers in many places. It does add a "fresh" look! We had a wonderful 4th and I hope you did as well. Thanks for visiting today and come back soon!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I had planned to share my new front door decor, but alas, like many residents of the MS Gulf Coast, all  loose outside objects have been secured as we await the arrival of Hurricane Isaac. Instead, I thought I would share with you a set of my favorite dinnerware.  I began collecting Memory Lane ironstone many years ago, but my love of the pattern began when I was just a little girl.  My Grandma Mercer had one dinner plate.  I imagine that she picked it up either in a box of laundry soap or as a reward for shopping at the IGA of Chattahoochee, Florida.  I came to love her one plate.  My grandmother would make sure that my food was served on that plate no matter what other dinnerware pattern was set on her table!  When she passed away, I was blessed to receive her dining room set which included a lovely buffet with glass knobs along with the matching table and chairs.  I also received my Memory Lane plate. During my search for more pattern pieces, I found out that Memory Lane is consi

Fun Fall Door Decor

I am ready for the heat of summer to be over and the cool breezes of fall to head our way.  My sister called me the other day and said she wanted to pull out her autumn decorations and to that I say "Amen, Sista"! We both can't wait to say, "Happy Fall Ya'll"!! In the meantime, I need to update my fall door decor and have been looking for a few, fresh ideas.  Better Homes and Gardens had some wonderful fall wreath ideas.  I adore this unusual "wreath" made from a rake. Who said a wreath must be round? Etsy and Pinterest have an abundance of wreath ideas including several swags to use on your harvest door. Another cute idea from Better Homes and Gardens. It makes me think of  warm apple crisp topped with a dollop of whipped cream!   Yum!  Or how about those wonderfully apple scented candles?  Love those! Monograms are all the rage.  I think this would be a simple wreath to make.  Raise your hand if you like simple projects! Super cu

Thanksgiving Dinnerware to Grace Any Table

Southern Living recently published an article entitled "Turkey Plate Special" chronicling the origins of certain patterns.  Who knew that when Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, we would end up with beautiful transferware patterns honoring the official bird of Thanksgiving?  I was excited to see my pattern, "His Majesty" by Johnson Brothers in the article.  We lovingly call these our Traveling Turkey Dishes.  Click  here  to find out why! I set our Reading Room   table with His Majesty for a quick peek at this beautiful pattern.  I love my "Traveling Turkey Dishes".  It is a joy to get them out and use them throughout November.  I also love this old table.  It has the scars of a well lived life and reminds me so much of my sweet grandmother who loved it as much as I do. A close up of His Majesty shows the lovely colors of the season.  I don't own the turkey platter, but it is on my wish list! (Replacements) Anot
