A Touch of Fall: Burlap Wreaths!

Down in the deep south, we consider any temperature below 90 degrees cool weather.  Our week began with temperatures in the "cool" 70's and 80's!  Fall seemed to be just around the corner...well, almost!  

We were recently out of school for several days due to Hurricane Isaac.  I made good use of the days and began decorating our home for the upcoming season. Fall is my favorite time of year.  My love for this season began when we moved to Rockland, Maine.  My dad is retired from the U.S. Coast Guard.  We have been blessed to have lived in many beautiful locations around the world.  When I was three, my dad received orders to Puerto Rico.  I remember that everything on the island was lush and green.  Several years later, we were transferred to Maine.  Talk about a change in climates!  I recall traveling in our car down canopied roads ablaze with color.  The leaves had turned to gorgeous colors of golds, burnt orange, delicious hues of red, russet, and bronze.  I was enthralled.  So when August turns to September, I am ready to bring out reminders of this beautiful season.

This year I decided to make new front door wreaths.  Everyone is using burlap these days and I jumped aboard the burlap train!  I chose colors of brown, tan, and orange to make burlap rosettes of varying sizes.  Burlap, hot glue and a little patience is all you need.  I topped each with a fluffy burlap bow.     Well done my new SEC friend! I jumped on the burlap wreath wagon last fall and I'm still loving mine! Last year it was on my door and this year it's on my mantle. Come Check it out. That cooler weather was just a teaser apparently - but hey, you can't squeeze oj in your birthday suit in November in Maine!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I had planned to share my new front door decor, but alas, like many residents of the MS Gulf Coast, all  loose outside objects have been secured as we await the arrival of Hurricane Isaac. Instead, I thought I would share with you a set of my favorite dinnerware.  I began collecting Memory Lane ironstone many years ago, but my love of the pattern began when I was just a little girl.  My Grandma Mercer had one dinner plate.  I imagine that she picked it up either in a box of laundry soap or as a reward for shopping at the IGA of Chattahoochee, Florida.  I came to love her one plate.  My grandmother would make sure that my food was served on that plate no matter what other dinnerware pattern was set on her table!  When she passed away, I was blessed to receive her dining room set which included a lovely buffet with glass knobs along with the matching table and chairs.  I also received my Memory Lane plate. Mississippi Spice Muffins for Busy Mornings!

Our family has always felt that it was important to eat together as a family as often as possible.  During the school week, this meant breakfast and supper.  During the weekend, it meant all three meals.  Mealtime is such a wonderful time to talk to your children and share their experiences of the day.  It also provides you an additional time to pray together as a family.  Many teachable moments occur during our family mealtimes.  I should emphasize that our mealtimes are spent at the table, not in front of the television.  Breakfast can be very hectic, so when my boys were little, I came up with a simple method to reduce any fussing about what we were going to eat.  They always knew that Monday was Muffin Monday , Tuesday was Toast Tuesday (cinnamon toast, cheese toast, peanut butter toast), Wednesday was Waffle Wednesday , Thursday was Thirsty Thursday (nutrient packet fruit smoothies) and Friday was Free Friday (anything goes!).
