The Shoe Fairy and Milk Glass Fairy!

Have you ever heard of the Shoe Fairy?  If you love shoes as much as I do, you would probably love to have a Shoe Fairy.  When I worked as a counselor at a school, I was lucky to have my own Shoe Fairy.  Really!!  One day, I came into work and found a shoebox with a brand new pair of shoes in my mailbox.  After doing a little investigation (by the way- counselors are good at that), I found out that one of the teachers had given them to me.  She couldn't wear the pair and knew that my foot was the same size.  Over the years, the Shoe Fairy would strike numerous times, leaving almost new shoes in my box.   Margaret, whom I began to call the Shoe Fairy, might wear the shoes once or twice and decide they didn't fit her as well as she would have liked.  She obviously did not like clutter in her closet because she got rid of the shoes fairly quickly.  Wish I could say that about my closet!
After several years, I took a position at the school's district office and sadly left my Shoe Fairy behind.  I never thought that I was leaving a Shoe Fairy for a Milk Glass Fairy!  Bet you don't have one of those, either! I have been collecting milk glass for many years.  Imagine my surprise when a dear co-worker dropped by my office with a tattered box containing several pieces of milk glass!  Joanne was helping a friend clean out her mother's home when they came across this box in the attic.   She knew I would appreciate the glassware.  As I began to unpack the box, I was surprised to see a lovely Hobnail set consisting of six- 9 ounce glasses, a pitcher, vase and candy dish.  Here is a picture of the set after I removed it from the box, prior to cleaning.  Isn't it a lovely set!  After a little soap and water, the dust and dirt swirled down the sink to reveal beautiful, creamy white glass.  The set is now displayed with my other treasured and much used pieces.  This was not the first time a piece of milk glass appeared on my desk from Joanne.  She might see a piece at a yard sale and pick it up for me.  Such a thoughtful friend!  Psalm 17:17 tells us that "A friend loves at all times". Both my Shoe Fairy and Milk Glass Fairy are wonderful examples of loving, generous friends!

    1. My favorite thing about collecting milk glass is that you can incorporate it into some many decors and you don't have to save up for a purchase. I think some of my most expensive purchases have been cake plates, but even then, not as expensive as some items my friends collect. Have a wonderful day! We are waiting for snow on the MS Gulf Coast!!

  5. How nice! My Mama had a set like that and we only used it on special occasions. My oldest sister has it now, along with other pieces she has collected.

Give Me Life, Liberty and Homemade Ice Cream!

Are you looking for a fabulous ice cream recipe for a 4th of July celebration? Luckily, your search is over! I shared this ice cream recipe several years ago and it is a perfect time to share again. This is a traditional cooked custard recipe my dad has made for years.  It makes the most creamy, deliciousness that you will ever put in your mouth.  You can really taste the difference between a cooked ice cream and a non-cooked ice cream.  It doesn't take long to prepare this recipe and it is worth the little bit of effort you will put into it. In fact, I have all the ingredients sitting on the counter ready to make the custard.  I have to tell you that we often fight over who gets to lick the spoon and clean out the bowl! Let's look at the Starting Line-Up.  Just a few basic ingredients.   Please note that the ice cream salt in the picture is only for my ice cream freezer and not for the recipe!! If you are like me, I like the recipe all at once and...

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I had planned to share my new front door decor, but alas, like many residents of the MS Gulf Coast, all  loose outside objects have been secured as we await the arrival of Hurricane Isaac. Instead, I thought I would share with you a set of my favorite dinnerware.  I began collecting Memory Lane ironstone many years ago, but my love of the pattern began when I was just a little girl.  My Grandma Mercer had one dinner plate.  I imagine that she picked it up either in a box of laundry soap or as a reward for shopping at the IGA of Chattahoochee, Florida.  I came to love her one plate.  My grandmother would make sure that my food was served on that plate no matter what other dinnerware pattern was set on her table!  When she passed away, I was blessed to receive her dining room set which included a lovely buffet with glass knobs along with the matching table and chairs.  I also received my Memory Lane plate. During my search for more pattern pieces...

A Treasure in the Vines....Waverly Plantation

Imagine a dream.  A dream in which you are wandering through the woods and discover a beautiful, long forgotten home.  A home which rises above jasmine vines wrapped tightly around graceful columns.  A home which has endured the ravages of rain, the heat of hot Mississippi summers, the infestation of bees and bats, and yet still retains the grace of a bygone era.  Such a dream came true for the Snow family. Robert and Donna Snow owned an antique store in Phildelphia, MS.  One day a salesman stopped by and told them that he had gotten lost down by the river and found a beautiful home, hidden in the woods near West Point, MS.  According to Melanie Snow, one of the Snow's children, her parents stayed up all night thinking about the home.  The next morning they told their children that they were going on an adventure, packed the kids in the car,  and off they went.  Imagine their delight when they discovered this beautiful home . . . Waverly....
